Day 26 - The Thanksgiving Push Up Challenge

Many of you will have the question, shouldn't I take off Thanksgiving? 26 days in a row? There is football and family and I have to travel and cook and I just want to take the day off... Short answer - NO. No excuses. The real question is whether you will be doing your push ups before or after the Thanksgiving meal. Option #1 - Push-ups before the meal. Feel good that you have completed your reps before Thanksgiving. Feel less bloated. This was my choice. Option #2 - Push-ups after the meal. You may feel like your tummy is a little larger. Bonus - you do not have to go down as far. I don't recommend this option. But it is better than nothing at all. By the way, as you go towards the floor, according to military push up standards, you should not to touch the floor with your chest. Happy Thanksgiving and lets be thanksful that we can exercise and get stronger EVERY DAY! Now lets see if I can cook this Turkey today...

Day 24 - How long does it take to create muscle tone?

Image
According to an article in the Times of India , "you have to target a specific muscle group on a particular day get your muscles toned. You should correct your form and increase repetitions with time. Depending on the intensity and the consistency of your workout, it will take 4 to 8 weeks for your muscles to get toned." Good news. For 3 1/2 weeks, you have been consistently working on the same muscle group. You have been increase your repetitions daily and hopefully improving your form. You should begin, if you have not already, starting to feel muscle tone develop. Push ups target the following muscle groups : Chest muscles, or pectorals Shoulders, or deltoids Back of your arms, or triceps Abdominals The wing muscles under your armpit, called the serratus anterior

Day 20 - Halfway There

Image
This is not about me. It's about making a difference. It's what happens when you are recovering in a hospital for one week. You learn firsthand that life is short. November 20th was Day 20 of Day 40 in the Push Yourself Up to Make a Difference. This was a special day to be on the course with my wonderful father-in-law to experience Bandon Dunes Golf Resort Sheep Ranch Golf Course. We were lucky to get a sunny day above 50 degrees in the middle of November. Although we have already exceeded the $5,000 fundraising goal for my friends at Homeboy Industries who help former gang members get back into society, we can always do more. Here is the link to give https://lnkd.in/ggXg4XH and the blog to follow along the journey. https://lnkd.in/gBmeu_i Thank you Ben Heiney for recording the video. #leadership #gratefulness #courageous #pushups #fundraising #charity #givebacktothecommunity #thanksgiving2020 #40strategy

Day 19 - Are you still in it? If so, you are developing a habit...

Image
If you are still on this journey on Day 19, it is likely we can create a habit. According to this article below, it can take anywhere from 18 to 254 days for a person to form a new habit and an average of 66 days for a new behavior to become automatic. https://www.healthline.com/health/how-long-does-it-take-to-form-a-habit#tips-and-tricks Let's keep it going. We are almost half way through the challenge.

Have you considered 176,200 push ups in one year? Nathan Tirey did.

This is exactly what Nathan Tirey did to honor the 176,200 people who receive a blood cancer diagnosis on an annual basis. He did this after he received news that he had cancer as well and underwent chemotherapy. He averaged 484 push ups per day. Keep pushing. 15 push ups. 16 push ups.

Day 14 - We don't take off weekends. Keep it up.

14 push ups in the books, 2 full weeks. Body continuing to get back into shape from the surgery. At Day 21, you should definitely feel stronger and start to see a bit of tone.

Day 13 - The Best Part of a Travel Ban...

Is that you can still do your push ups anywhere there is a flat surface. Day 13 - 13 push ups. Completed on floor by desk. Check.

Day 12 - How many push ups can an average person do?

According to Maureen Malone from Lifestrong.com and the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology, the average 50 year old male should be able to do 10 to 12 push ups. The average 50 year old female should be able to do 7 to 10 push ups. On Day 12, you are beginning to exceed the averages. Nice job. 12 push ups in the books. Here's the larger chart below: 15 to 19 years old: 23 to 28 push-ups for men, 18 to 24 push-ups for women 20 to 29 years old: 22 to 28 push-ups for men, 15 to 20 push-ups for women 30 to 39 years old: 17 to 21 push-ups for men, 13 to 19 push-ups for women 40 to 49 years old: 13 to 16 push-ups for men, 11 to 14 push-ups for women 50 to 59 years old: 10 to 12 push-ups for men, seven to 10 push-ups for women 60 years and older: eight to 10 push-ups for men, five to 11 push-ups for women

In the Eye of the Hurricane - Getting Back to Strategy

Image
In the Eye of the Hurricane Getting Back to Strategy As Hurricane Theta formed on November 9th, 2020 become the most active hurricane season on record. Are we surprised? This has been a remarkable year. Let's do a quick summary. Australia burned a record 47 million acres Prince Harry and Meghan Markle quit the royal family COVID-19 pandemic Kobe Bryant's death President Trump was impeached Stock market crashed Unemployment peaked over 14% Black Lives Matter protests US West record fires Unemployment reduces to less than 7% Stock market reach record highs And did we forget the election? Through all of this, many have not been able to catch their breath. We are ready for the year to be over. But there is a pause...if feels like the eye of the hurricane. There are many uncertainties, but it is more likely than not that the storm is at least half way over. And now is the time to get back to strategy. Certainty will begin to return. It is those who are able to move first that will

Day 10 - Met our goal to raise $5,000! Let's keep pushing to raise more now.

Image
Thank you, thank you, thank you! We have successfully raised $5,000, the goal! And good news, we are only on Day 10 of this 40 Day fundraiser.  Can we double the goal? Any and all is greatly appreciated. 10 Push Ups - Check! (pun intended)

Day 8 and Day 9 - Consistency and repetition builds strength

Image
Day 8 - Sunday - Normally, I like to take a day of rest from exercising, work, etc. However, I am going a straight 40 Days for this program. No days off. Days off start after the 40 Day program if you want to continue along. Eight push ups done. Day 9 - Monday - It's cold outside. At 5:22 AM is was 28 degrees outside my house. Stood there for 3 minutes outside for a little cold therapy before heading into the hot tub. Nine push ups in the book with stretches.  Picture is view of rings above Mt. Hood a couple of weeks ago in the sunrise. I am hopeful to play golf in 11 days...almost 10 weeks after surgery.

Day 7 - One Week officially in the Books

Working on that daily habit to exercise again. 7 Push Ups completed. Starting to get that strength back. For those following, there will be a point that you need to break up the push ups into different sets. That is ok and makes sense. Here's my recommendation, whether you do the push ups from your knees or standard push ups, try to do the most amount of reps in a specific set right before you are unable to do anymore. Rest two minutes and then start your next set. Another option is to split the sets in different parts of the day. As you build strength, you will be able to do more reps in each set.

Day 6 - Let’s go

Six push ups in the books. I start my day with reading, prayer, daily Zig Ziglar motivation, glass of water, hot tub, stretch, measure weight, and then exercise - preferably before 6:30 AM. Do I all these things everyday - no. But that is the goal. Eight scheduled Zoom meetings today, time to move. First one starts at 7:00 AM.

Day Five - Are you still tracking?

Image
Day 5 - Are you still tracking? Five push-ups completed today. Life always has the aches and pains. For the past couple of weeks, I have been dealing with sciatica - feels like my left big toe toe nail is coming off. I have found push ups have helped my back problems and look forward to getting my core back in shape. Join now. The first time that I did a program like this was four years ago. I started on Day 13.

Day Four - Easy to Go Down...

Image
I love it when the autumn turns leaves into beautiful colors such as this tree near my work. Yet, they will eventually fall to the ground and it will take months for these trees to develop trees again. That is how a push up program can feel like. You go down and you wonder if you can get back up. This gradual process will eventually turn into positive results. But it takes a bit of consistency and gradual progression. And yes, I feel a bit of soreness in my left shoulder. On to 40.

Day 3 - Three Push Ups

I have to make a confession. I actually did six push ups today. Miscounted with my stretching routine. Here is a video sharing the reasons to do this 40 Day Program and why you should join me.

Day Two - Two Push Ups

Image
That's it. Two Push Ups. Join me.

Push Yourself Up to Make a Difference

Image
Nearly 40 days ago my life was put on hold with a burst appendix. The appendectomy left me in the hospital for one week 100 miles away from family and friends. It was a humbling experience, and I am grateful to the Centralia hospital and staff who helped me get through a challenging time. My next huge gratitude goes to my wife who nursed me back to health at home. Now, it is time to get back into shape and give the proceeds to one of my favorite charities, Homeboy Industries. I have helped raise over $4,000 and I am trying to push over the $5,000 mark with the following push-up program. It is simple.  Day One, November 1st, do One Push Up.  Day Two, November 2nd, do Two Push Ups.  Day Three, November 3rd, do Three Push Ups. This will continue until December 10th with 40 Push Ups. There are two ways to join this program. Simply give $40, $400 or more in support of the cause. The second way is to join me in the program. You can start with me on any day and there is no time
